Why do we need a Learning and Development Framework?

The role of councillor is complex. Councillors have different backgrounds and experience. They need knowledge and skills to be good councillors. The Framework provides councillors with the needed learning activities.
People from Government and the community have said councillors need education. This will help councillors to work for their communities.

Why is councillor learning and development important?

Councillor learning and development is important. It will lead to better councillors, decisions and councils. It will help build positive relationships and cultures in councils.

Will councillors have to undertake this or any other education and training pre or post local government elections?

Councillors take an oath of office and promise to do education and training. The community also expects their councillors to be able to do their role well. The community and councils know that councillor learning and development is important.

How can I access the online learning modules?

Councillors can log in to the Learning Management System here. All councillors are enrolled and do not need to do anything. If you are unsure about your enrolment, you can contact learntolead@lgat.tas.gov.au
If you work in local government, please speak to your Executive Leader about your access to the LGAT LMS.
Unfortunately, community members and election candidates do not have access to the LMS and online modules. There are a number of resources, including Candidate and Councillor Handbooks, that are available on the LGAT website.

I am enrolled in the modules but have lost my password, need a password reset, or do not know how to access the online learning modules.

Do I need to know how to use a computer?

Yes, you will use a computer or smart device to do the online modules. The modules are also available as handouts to help you. If you need help developing your computer skills, Libraries Tasmania provide free and widely available computing and technology programs.

This program will help to teach you about:

Internet basics
Apple or android device basics
eSafety basics
email basics
connecting to others, social media basics

The Department of State Growth also provide a course called Digital ready for daily life and 26TEN can also help with reading, writing and maths.
